We have now released focuspoint-linux beta 2 (filename: focuspoint-linux-2024.04.12-b14-minimal-amd64.iso)

As usual you can download it by going to our sourceforge profile.
There is a lot of changes in the beta 2, here are some of them.

Features:
– Gimp: GIMP (/ɡɪmp/ GHIMP), is a free and open-source raster graphics editor used for image manipulation (retouching) and image editing, free-form drawing, transcoding between different image file formats, and more specialized tasks. We have added a lot of plugins to gimp this time.

– darktable: darktable is an open source photography workflow application and raw developer. A virtual lighttable and darkroom for photographers. It manages your digital negatives in a database, lets you view them through a zoomable lighttable and enables you to develop raw images and enhance them.

– Rawtherapee: RawTherapee is a powerful, cross-platform raw photo processing system, released as Free Software (GPLv3). It is designed for developing raw files from a broad range of digital cameras and targeted at users ranging from enthusiast newcomers who wish to broaden their understanding of how digital imaging works to professional photographers.

– digiKam: digiKam is an advanced open-source digital photo management application that runs on Linux, Windows, and macOS. The application provides a comprehensive set of tools for importing, managing, editing, and sharing photos and raw files.

– LightZone: LightZone is a professional-level digital darkroom and photo editor for Mac, Windows, and Linux. It includes RAW processing and editing. Rather than using layers in the way that other photo editors do, LightZone lets the user build up a stack of tools which can be rearranged, readjusted, turned off and on, and removed from the stack. It’s a completely non-destructive editor, where any of the tools can be re-adjusted or modified later. We have included LightZone beta 5.2.x

nomacs: nomacs is a free, open source image viewer, which supports multiple platforms. You can use it for viewing all common image formats including RAW and psd images. nomacs has a bit of an learning curve, but as you try it out you will experience that it has a ton of features.

Tweaks and color profiles: FocusPoint Linux is tweaked and sat up in a way that should make it real easy for anyone to start editing photos, we even include a really feature rich software (Rapid Photo Downloader) for importing your photos onto your drives.
We are including a number of color profiles making sure that you can import, export, print and proof your images with your preferred color profiles.

Settings:

  • Added QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=qt5ct in environment
  • Tweaked panel settings
  • Changed “dock” to xfce4-docklike-plugin, so we are now using a native xfce4 “dock” rather than plank or starter buttons
  • We are now using focuspoint-linux-desktop as the package to tie up our settings and look and feel.
  • Changed some logo settings in our plymouth theme (what you see during boot and shutdown.

Major bugs:

  • “Systray icons like network, update and bluetooth are not visible after login
    — Workaround solution restart panel (open terminal and write “xfce4-panel -r” (without quotes) this reloads the panel and it should pop up in the top panel. We are unsure as to why this happens, it is a known problem for xfce4, but that does not nescesarily mean that is the cause here.
    Fix: remove packages:
    ayatana-indicator-application
    ayatana-indicator-common

Do NOT remove any of the other ayatana packages as they are needed.
    read more here

Known issues:

  • System tray not properly loaded at login, see above
  • The message to remove media after installation of focuspoint linux does not show up after install
    — Workaround solution : Wait a minute, pull out media and hit Enter key, it will now restart. This is a problem with a missing label and not a system hang.
  • Missmatch between wallpaper and Login screen image.
    — Solution: Go into settings/LightDM GTK+ Greeter Settings and change to correct image.

Finally, we are getting real close to our first release. FocusPoint Linux is based on Ubuntu 23.10, this means that it is only supported with updates until mid June 24. Now this means that you will be able to upgrade from 23.10 in late April when Ubuntu 24.04 releases. We expect no problems when it comes to updating from 23.10 to 23.04. 23.04 is a LTS which means it will be supported with updates until 2032
